First Time Flyers

There is a first time for everything! It is the same for flying; everyone who chooses to use air travel will have to take their first flight at some point, so we have put together a short guide for first time flyers. For anyone flying for the first time it is worth noting that each airport and airline will be slightly different but hopefully this short guide should be able to help you in your way

Security - it is there to keep you safe

It is important you are aware of the security measures issued by the Department for Transport. This will include restrictions on the amount of hand luggage, amount of liquids which can be carried in hand luggage; weight restrictions on hold and hand luggage. You will be required to have any electrical equipment screened separately. Medicines and baby foods are allowed, however there are guidelines around this which you will need familiarise yourself with. Also, from February 2010 Government legislation came into operation for use of Body Scanners in some airports. Passenger are selected at random and anyone who refuses to use the scanner will be denied travel.

Are you scared of flying?

If so, you could read our "Fear of flying" guide which is also available on this website, but if you require additional assistance there are books, courses and treatments available to ease your fear.

Flight Tickets

Your ticket or itinerary will detail all the flight information you require. This information should include:

  • The airports you are flying from and to
  • Your flight number
  • Departure and arrival times
  • Baggage allowance
  • The check-in time - it is very important to check as it varies from airline to airline. It is calculated to give you enough time to check-in your luggage and make your way to the plane
Please note that you may not be issued with a paper ticket as you may just get a confirmation number. This depends on the airline.

Hold Baggage

This is for larger items of luggage which need to be checked in and stowed on the airplane. This will not be seen again after check in until you arrive at the other end. Hold Baggage usually includes suitcases, and larger rucksacks. Please check your baggage allowance prior to arriving at the airport as you may be charged for extra weight.

Hand Baggage

Restrictions apply to hand baggage at UK airports and you are usually only allowed to take one hand baggage per person.

Arrival at the Airport

Your ticket / itinerary should provide you with the details of your departure terminal as there is often more than one terminal at the airport. Once you know which terminal you need to decide how to get to the airport. If you decide to travel by car, check out our car parking options via www.goparknfly.co.uk/

Check-In Desks

These are found inside the terminal building.. Look for the check-in desk with your flight number displayed above it. The check-in person will require you to have your tickets and passport ready. They will check your passport and tickets, ask you some security questions and then provide you with a print out of your boarding pass. They also weigh your luggage and tag it with your flight details. You can also check yourself in using one of the self-service kiosks.

Flight Departures

Once you check-in you can go through to the departure lounge. To get to the departure lounge you will need to show your boarding card and pass through Security where your hand luggage will be screened.

Keep an eye on the screens - Gate and Boarding

There are screens throughout the airport which display the flights. Keep an eye out for the gate number at which you need to board your plane. There will be plenty of signs to point you in the direction of how to get to the required gate. Airline attendants will call you forward to board the plane. You just simply hand them your boarding card / passport and board the plane. As you enter the plane someone from cabin crew will welcome you, check the remaining piece of your boarding card and point you to your seat.

Arriving at the other side

Once the plane lands at your destination airport you will leave the plane and will be required to show your passport to security officials before enter the baggage reclaim. Screens in the airport will display the flight number above your luggage carousel. Once you have collected your luggage you will head through customs to the arrivals hall.
