Port of Dover
The Port of Dover is easily the most famous ferry port in the UK today, and rightfully so considering that it has been in use since 1606. As a result of its pivotal part in World War II, it is historically important as well as one of the world’s major functional seaports currently.
Today, five ferry operators run services to various ports in Europe out of Dover. However, the connections to Dunkerque, Calais and Boulogne are the most popular and so run regularly 24 hours a day.
Located on the southeast coast, Dover is just 70 miles from London and very easy to get to. However, with crossings at least once every 90 minutes, it can get very busy at the docks so all passengers are advised to make it there at least 30 minutes before they depart.
