Robin Hood Airport (DSA) - Doncaster
Robin Hood Airport in Doncaster, Sheffield currently has a throughput of around 1 million passengers per year, offering them flights to over 35 destinations.
Robin Hood airport was initially an RAF base (RAF Finningley) which was opened in 1936. It played an important role throughout the First World War and the Cold War acting as an integral command base for the bombers spearheading the front line. It was also an essential training centre for the pilots and navigators during conflict.
It has a 2891 metre long runway (which is one of the longest in the north of England) which was resurfaced 20 years ago in 1989. It was still used only for military purposes until 1995 when it was decommissioned by the MOD as surplus to requirements.
After 3 years of the site being closed, Peel Holdings PLC (who own three other airports) purchased the site in 1999. Their industrious plan was to turn the decommissioned military complex into a modern, commercial airport.
6 years later the first commercial passenger flight proceeded outbound in April 2005.
